The nuclear capabilities of businesses in Cumbria have the potential to be scaled into lucrative global solutions and products.
That’s the verdict of Tim Gilroy, a leading nuclear specialist with the Department for Business and Trade, who will speak at a special conference this month.
Companies with nuclear capability or capacity are being invited to attend the free half-day event, which has a line-up of speakers with international expertise.
They will hear from businesses already exporting, and from experts in the civil nuclear space, who will outline opportunities – and share how to approach overseas trade.
Tim, who for 35 years has worked in the nuclear industry, said: “Cumbria boasts world-leading expertise in the nuclear sector and there are many examples of businesses that have packaged this and sold it to the global market.
“This month’s event will focus on the opportunities that exist, routes to market, and the free support that is available from the Department for Business and Trade to help companies make informed decisions and create a roadmap to export success.”
The event is being organised by BECBC and is being delivered with the Department for Business and Trade.
Joining Tim will be Tiffany Solender, international trade advisor & NPH clean energy specialist; Kerstin Rath, senior trade advisor for civil nuclear based in Germany and Luisa Craciun senior trade advisor based in Romania and the CEN (Central Europe) representative.
There will also be a presentation from Matt Mellor, the chief executive of nuclear innovators, Createc. Matt will share how his business navigated the process of becoming an exporter and how support from the Department for Business and Trade helped.
The event is designed to help delegates decide if exporting is for them and if so which markets to focus on.
For businesses that already export, it will place a focus on the right markets moving forward and ensure they are aware of the support available to help you build an export market.

The event will be held at the National College for Nuclear, Workington, on March 9.
A free networking lunch will be provided from noon, with the main event getting under way at 1pm. Presentations will finish by 3.30pm, with a further half hour of networking before the event draws to a close.
