There was an increase in police in Carlisle city centre as protestors gathered to oppose asylum seekers moving into the area.
The protest – and counter protest – took place in the area of the Market Cross today, March 4.
A police spokesman said: “A policing operation was put in place to facilitate the protest and the public will have seen an increased police presence within the city centre. We would like to thank the public for their patience whilst officers facilitated the protest.
“As a force our role is to facilitate the protest and we will always seek to work with protest organisers and those taking part to enable free speech and our upmost priority is the safety of those attending and the wider public.
“A policing operation is in place to facilitate the protest and the public will see an increased police presence within the city centre.
“The protest must be balanced with the rights of others, keeping the public safe, preventing crime and disorder, and seeking to minimise disruption.”
