A driver accused of causing serious multiple injuries to a Penrith woman by driving dangerously on the A66 is to stand trial in front of a jury later this year.

Dean Shakespeare, 45, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today and pleaded not guilty to one charge.

It alleges that Shakespeare caused serious injury to Fiat Panda driver Caroline Musimwa by driving a Nissan Qashqai dangerously.

The allegation arises out of a two-vehicle collision on a dual carriageway stretch of the A66 eastbound, close to Stainmore, during daylight hours on August 1, 2022.

After entering his not guilty plea from the court dock, Shakespeare listened as lawyers in the case outlined a timetable for progression of the case.

A trial is due to take place in the week of July 31 this year and, it is estimated, will last three to four days. A pre-trial review hearing is scheduled to take place in late June.

In the meantime Shakespeare, of South View Terrace, York, was granted bail by Judge Guy Mathieson.
