Here are the photos from the second Uppies and Downies game in Workington.
Held on Easter Tuesday, the historic game dates back centuries and sees the town split in two – Uppies aim to get the specially-made ball to Workington Hall to hail it and Downies to Workington harbour.
The ball was thrown off on Easter Tuesday by Imogen Daglish, following in her grandad, dad and brothers’ footsteps. It was the eight-year-old’s first time and she was excited at the honour – if not a little nervous.
After one of the wettest and coldest games in recent history – the players carried on despite a weather warning in force for strong winds – the ball was eventually hailed by Brian Fearon.
Brian passed the ball to Nathan Askew while the scrum was in the Cloffocks car park, who walked it up to Workington Hall. There, he passed it to Brian to hail. Brian and Nathan dedicated the ball to Brian’s son Carl who died in 2012.
Although Uppies have won the 2023 series – Downies will be playing for pride during the last game, which takes place on Saturday.
We’ll be live from 6pm, bringing you all the updates from the game as it happens. See you there!
