With the new look Workington Comets ready to relaunch at Press and Practice on Saturday it’s worth looking back to the last speedway meeting at Derwent Park.
It was the end of October 2018 when the Comets completed their best ever season by winning the Championship Shield decider to achieve a remarkable treble.
They had already beaten Scunthorpe Scorpions to collect the Knockout Cup and then they beat Lakeside Hammers become Championship League winners for the first time.
The Championship Shield looked the easiest to complete as they had already beaten Lakeside away by two points so went into the home leg with an advantage. They had to pull back big deficits to win the other two.
There wasn’t much doubt about this one after two 5-1’as in the first couple of races extended their lead and they never seriously looked in any danger.
In the end they won 52-38 for a 98-82 aggregate victory and land the third piece of silverware for the Comets trophy cabinet.
It was a tremendous achievement by the promotion, manager Tony Jackson and the team of riders who had been dramatically hit with injuries to Dan Bewley and Ty Proctor.
Reserve Mason Campton top-scored on the night with 12 and a bonus while Rasmus Jensen scored 12. Other contributions came from Nicolai Klindt 10 + 1; Rene Back 8 + 3; Kyle Bickley 7 + 1 and Stefan Nielsen 3 + 1.
Former Comet Richard Lawson top-scored for the Hammers with 10 + 1.
Sadly for Workington speedway fans that was it. The Comets were no more after that season but after four barren years they are to launch again under new management at the old Northside Training track.
The riders will be practicing this Saturday from 12 noon and the first National Development League match follows the following week at home to Edinburgh.
