A Whitehaven man, prominent in fishing and pigeon racing circles, has died suddenly.
Barry Patrickson, 52, was a keen member of the White Horse Sea Angling Club and also a partner in a successful pigeon racing partnership in the Sandwith club.
Sunday’s Sea Angling match organised by the White Horse club was cancelled as a mark of respect after hearing of Barry’s death.
Barry, who had worked in trawling most of his life was an ever-present, keen competitor in club matches.
A club colleague said: “He was always heartily enthusiastic about his fishing and over the years had won many categories within the club.
“He will be missed by all the club members who would like to pass on their heartfelt commiserations to all of Barry’s family and friends.”
Danny Rodgers, a member of the West Cumberland Federation posted a message for pigeon fanciers.
“I’ve just heard the devastating news that we have lost a popular member of our federation.
“Barry Patrickson has sadly passed away and this has come as a great shock to all who knew him.
“Barry came back into the sport a number of years ago and recently joined forces with Billy Cottier and Willie Henderson to achieve some great performances.
“Always smiling, having a crack and willing to help down the Fed is how I’ll remember him. Thoughts are with Barry’s family and friends as well as Billie and Willie at this terribly sad time.
“RIP Baz, gone far too soon my friend.”
Pigeon racing had been suspended last Saturday but in the previous week’s race from Yeovil the Patrickson loft had won Sandwith club and taken a high position in the Federation.
