A man whose role in cocaine supply emerged after he tried to flee from police after they stopped him at Carlisle’s Lanes shopping centre has been given a chance to rehabilitate.
Lee Thomas Field, was spoken to in the centre in December 2019, after police were initially called to reports of a disturbance.
Field, now aged 39, made off as he was being searched and hurled a set of weighing scales into a bush. But he was caught and found to be in possession of several individual cocaine deals with a total weight of 3.27g.
Then, when a Motorola phone was recovered and analysed, it revealed that he had been involved in dealing the class A drug to others.
Earlier this week, Field — previously of Carlisle and now of Brookfield Avenue, Wigton — admitted being concerned in the supply of cocaine. This had occurred during a period of just over two months between September 19 and December 23 2019.
The guilty plea had been put forward by the defendant on a formal basis deemed acceptable by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Field was sentenced today by Recorder Tony Hawks. After hearing mitigation from the defendant’s barrister and taking account of the time which had passed since the offence was committed, the judge suspended an 18-month jail term for two years.
Field must also complete up to 25 days of rehabilitation work with the probation service. Appearing in court remotely over a video link from custody, he thanked his barrister after the hearing had concluded, telling her: “I won’t let you down.”
Recorder Hawks had also ordered the forfeiture of both the cocaine and scales which had been recovered.
