I went along to Egremont this week to meet up with a Cumbria rugby union legend, Mark ‘Tank’ Richardson.
His family have been involved in Hartley’s ice cream business for 40 years and in another 10 years it will be celebrating a centenary.
We chatted about ice cream and then turned to the game of rugby union in which Mark excelled for many years – playing for Egremont, Sale, Gosforth, Aspatria, Orrell and notably the Barbarians.
His greatest moment in a Cumbria shirt was lifting the County Championship Trophy at Twickenham while the Barbarians shirt, he wore against Leicester, hangs proudly in the Aspatria clubhouse.
