Rain doesn’t deter hounds championship action

Nicola McMaster with Rodney Raider

Normal HTA action returned to Potters Park last night with everyone looking for Championship points after the big prize money event at the weekend.

There was a good slip of 20 for the opening senior trail but it was a dreadful night with heavy rain.

Setting off as favourite was Huntsman’s Rebel after her brilliant win at Langholm Common Riding last week.

As they showed in the bottoms Huntsman’s Rebel had a good lead but as they came up and onto the finish she had been almost caught by the other hounds with Miterdale Duchess finishing fast.

However the line came too early for her and had to make do with second while the win for Huntsman’s Rebel takes her to five in total and she moves up to fifth in the championship table.

At the moment she seems to be the most consistent hound running in the senior trails. Winterfell did not run at Potter’s Park but still remains on 13 points and at the top of the championship table.

Miterdale Duchess is in second place with 10 wins and neither hound has been able to get home first over the last few weeks, with Winterfell even struggling to get in the tickets.

Next up was the Open Pup race with 17 runners and Glamorous Ava went out as favourite having won her last two races.

Crazy

As they showed on the finish it was table leader Rodney Raider who finished impressively to beat kennel mate Silver Dream. It’s usually Silver Dream who finishes well but Rodney Raider stuck on well and the win takes Nicola McMaster and David Todhunter’s hound to 13 wins in the puppy championship, now three points clear of Silver Dream.

Artist ran well for Bill and Pat Melon and Robert and Tina Airey and finished in third place, whilst Glamorous Ava could only manage fourth place on the night.

Last race of the night was the Open Restricted as the weather conditions continued to deteriorate. There were 14 runners and it was local hound Crazy who came with a good lead to repeat her win on Saturday for Jonty and Evie Moore and Jack Thompson.

Denise Bland with Huntsman’s Rebel

She beat home David Clifford’s Eden Romina with Denise Bland’s Missriff in third place.  Maverick for Joseph Abraham and Sadie Wilson finished in fourth place.

Maverick extended his lead in the Open Restricted points competition and is now eighteen points clear of his nearest rival Thorn Pop.

Action returns to Cold Fell on Wednesday night with a four-card meeting, with the first slip at 6pm. On field book-making and refreshments are available.
