The big news in local rugby league circles was the announcement from Whitehaven that they had a new board in place and there was renewed optimism around the LEL Arena.
Barry Morgan, a former Kells amateur, who retires from Sellafield this weekend, is the new chief executive so I thought it ideal to invite him to be my special guest for a chat about all things Whitehaven.
A number of the other new directors were present and it was clear that there is strong belief that they can complete the job and get the club back on an even keel.
They all stressed, too, what the club owed fellow director Gary Eilbeck and how he’s come in for unkind and unjust ciriticism over the last 18 months or so.
In our conversation Barry covered the club’s debts (nowhere near the figures which have appeared on social media), on how they have different jobs allocated to board members and are singing off the same hymn sheet; how they are going about recruiting for next season and where he believes Whitehaven will be next season.
