Workington went out of the FA Cup last night when they went down 3-1 at Darlington.
Reds had gone in all square at half-time after conceding the opening goal but two goals for the Quakers in the final quarter of the game took them into Monday’s draw.
Darlington had dominated the early exchanges and took the lead on 14 minutes when a clearance fell to Tom Platt on the edge of the area.
One of the three caretaker managers, he took a touch and drilled his shot low into the net beyond Jim Atkinson.
The Reds keeper had to hold onto well-struck shots from outside the area, but the visitors had their best moment which they cashed in on after 23 minutes.
A great clearance from Atkinson found Scott Allison who was able to slip the ball through to Steven Rigg and he went past keeper Tommy Taylor to level the scores.
Workington had a good spell after that, forcing a couple of corners, and they had Darlington scrambling on both occasions to clear.
Then finally the Quakers got forward again and were close to regaining the lead. Andrew Nelson had a shot kicked-off the line and his follow-up shot was well saved by Atkinson.
The sides were all square at the break which was probably a fair reflection on balance with Darlington dominant at the start and Reds looking better after they equalised.
Darlington had the first good chance in the second half when Cameron Salkeld put in a great cross but Kaine Felix put his unmarked header over the bar.
In fact the Quakers started the second half as they had in the first half and Reds were content to contain them.
The general opinion was that Darlington had played their best football of the season in the first half.
Goal-scorer Rigg was replaced by Kofi Moore after 59 minutes – the first change of the game.
Although the home side had most of the possession Tommy Taylor, the Darlington keeper had to make two good saves in quick succession to deny Moore and Allison.
Soon after Reds made their second change when Brad Hubbold came on for Niall Brookwell who appeared to be suffering badly from cramp.
Former Reds loanee Jacob Hazel was brought on as a substitute and he almost got his side back in front but Atkinson produced a fine save.
Atkinson then produced another superb save to palm away a strong drive from Platt.
The Darlington pressure told on 72 minutes when centre-half Toby Lees was up for a corner and headed home from close range.
Reds made their third change 10 minutes from time when Greg McCaragher replaced Ceiran Casson.
Moore had a chance two minutes from the end but Taylor did well to block and took a knock in the process.
The decisive third goal for the Quakers came in the first minute of the four added on when Hazel, who spent time on loan with Reds 10 or so years ago, finished off after Michael Curry had created the chance.
