A former West Cumbrian primary school was transformed into a sixth form with the help of council cash.
Cumberland Council has announced an £800,000 investment into plans for the former St Joseph’s Primary School in Cockermouth to become the sixth form campus for Whitehaven’s Mayfield School.
The new sixth form facilities has allowed the school to increase its student capacity from 197 to 230.
Classes began this month and an official opening ceremony is scheduled for October.
Mayfield School at St Joseph’s Campus is leased from the Diocese of Lancaster by Cumberland Council.
Councillor Elaine Lynch, Cumberland Council’s executive portfolio holder for lifelong learning and development, said: “With increasing demand for special school places, this expansion creates much needed additional capacity, while providing fantastic new facilities which will help young people reaching the end of their time at school develop and prepare for adult life.
“This commitment demonstrates our dedication to fostering a nurturing environment for students and educators. By prioritising our education facilities, we are actively paving the way for a brighter future for our young people.”
