A major housing scheme in Whitehaven could get the green light if councillors give the proposal their backing next week.
John Swift Homes is hoping to build 23 new homes and associated infrastructure and landscaping on land at Harras Road in Harras Park.
It will be considered by Cumberland Council’s planning committee from 10.30am on Wednesday, September 27, in Allerdale House, Workington.
It will be placed before the committee because it is a major housing scheme which lies outside of the designated development boundary for Whitehaven and is therefore a departure from the adopted development plan.
The application is a resubmission of a previous scheme which was refused by the members of the Copeland planning panel against officer advice.
It has been recommended that planning permission be granted, subject to conditions, and an agreement that the developer includes three affordable properties in the scheme.
According to a planning report if the planning obligation for affordable homes is not entered within six months of the date of the committee meeting planning permission will be refused.
Whitehaven Town Council has agreed to continue supporting residents in their objections of these developments.
In addition, the ward councillor has also written a separate letter of objection and has requested that he be able to address the planning committee with concerns regarding access, drainage, and overcrowding.
The council has received 30 letters of objection, over three separate consultation periods which raised a number of concerns including: highways issues; drainage; impact on Burton High Close; light and noise pollution; road safety issues; and an adverse impact on wildlife including foraging deer.
The site covers an area of 1.6 hectares and lies immediately to the north of Harras Road. It is joined on its western boundary by the building known as Casa Mia on the eastern edge of Whitehaven.
