A West Cumbrian institution has closed its doors for the final time.
Tognarellis, on Pow Street in Workington, served its final coffee yesterday, Saturday, September 30, as its owners retire.
It has been a fixture in Workington for five generations – over 120 years – but owners Martin Tognarelli and his sister Angela Hawley, have hung up their aprons.
At one stage, the Tognarelli family had three cafes in Workington and was famed for its ice cream, which used to be made in the town.
The pair posted on Facebook once they turned the closed sign for the final time.
They said: “After a very busy and emotional final week, we’d just like to say a huge heartfelt thank you to everyone who has made it so special!
“Thank you to all of our customers for our cards and gifts – we have been overwhelmed and humbled by your kindness and generosity. We will miss you all.
“Finally, a big thank you to all of our wonderful staff and supportive local businesses from over the years. Tognarellis has been so proud to be part of Workington’s high street for over 120 years and we couldn’t have done any of it without you!
“Arrivederci! Ciao and best wishes, Angela and Martin.”
