An injured fisherman who had hurt himself on a West Cumbrian beach had to be rescued.
The angler called 999 just before midnight yesterday, Wednesday, October 4, after he fell on rocks at Drigg beach and injured his leg.
He was unable to leave the beach and rang for the Coastguard as the tide was rolling in.
Whitehaven and Millom Coastguard rescue teams attended and reached the angler in a 4×4.
A Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team spokesman said: “We had just concluded water rescue practice when we got the call. Team medics assessed and treated the casualty and began to stretcher the angler off the beach to the awaiting ambulance crew who had now joined us on the beach.
“A handover was conducted to the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust crew to take the casualty on to their next level of care.

“Thankfully, this angler was well equipped for the activity they were undertaking. They were prepared in knowing to call 999 for the Coastguard as soon as they realised they required assistance, giving a precise location for the coastguard teams to attend and swiftly locate them.”
