Windscale opened their Monkwearmouth Cup campaign with a comfortable 6-2 win at Division One side Ferryhill Athletic.
On a difficult Dean Bank surface against a committed and physical side, the Atoms grasped the initiative early with goals from Owen Bell, Ross Leeson, Matty Pierce and Lewis Selkirk producing a healthy 4-0 half-time cushion.
Ferryhill indicated their intentions following the restart and were back in the game at 4-2 with strikes from Adam Morland and Kieron Richardson.
The introduction of Kieron Fraser for the Atoms turned the contest back into their favour, making his presence felt with two well-taken goals.
These completed the scoring and ensured Windscale’s passage into the next round.
The Atoms begin their Fred Conway Cumberland Senior Cup journey with a mid-week game on Wednesday under the lights at the Falcon Ground.
They have been drawn against Westmorland League side Braithwaite with a 7pm kick-off.
Cup Competitors continue on the agenda next Saturday. They host Darlington Town in the Alan Hood Memorial Trophy. It’s a repeat of last year’s final which saw Darlington claim the trophy with a victory against the Atoms on penalties.
