Workington Comets will continue to race on Saturday afternoons next season after moving up into the Championship.
No floodlights at Northside meant they have had to plump for afternoon racing but have decided not to switch to a Sunday.
The club said after the British Speedway AGM: “As you are all aware Sundays was suggested as our new race day in the Championship.
“On further consideration, we have elected to keep Saturday afternoons with a 3pm start time as our first choice, as this suits our business plan and allows us to maximise the potential of our facility.
“Sunday afternoons will be our alternative race day, should it be required.”
Youth development was a key feature of new initiatives decided on at the AGM and the club had this to say.
“Following on from this year’s successful come back in the National Development League, it proves we are fully committed to the youth development project, which was discussed at the AGM.
“At this moment in time, we are considering all our options and once we have made a decision which financial accommodates our business plan, we will provide an update.”
The Comets have only signed one rider for 2024, Sam McGurk, who was a member of the National Development League side but have emphasised to the fans that they are currently in talks with various riders and considering all options.
The club say: “It was decided that for the future of British Speedway that the team building limit should be capped at 38 points in the Championship League.
“Workington Speedway fully understands the reasons for doing so and we are totally committed to the preservation of British Speedway. We are currently in talks with various riders and considering all our options.”
The promotion duo of Andrew Bain and Steve Lawson have also revealed their vision for the development of the Comets.
They say: “We would like to thank you all for supporting us, in this new era of Workington speedway. We assure you we have listened to all your comments throughout the season regarding both on and off-track concerns.
“As you are aware we are trying to continually improve the facilities, so please be patient and when the 2024 season commences we hope you will notice major improvements.
“Throughout 2023 we were asked multiple times by both past and present supporters, if the club would one day return to the Championship League. Again, we listened and made the decision to return in 2024. As you can imagine this comes at a considerable financial commitment compared to operating in the NDL.
“Therefore, we hope we have made the right decision and your support continues in 2024 and beyond. To ensure it is financially viable to operate in the Championship, we have obviously had to raise our admission prices and bring them in line with other Championship teams.
“This decision was the most difficult one to make, but if we are to operate in the Championship it is a necessity.”
The admission prices for 2024 are: Adults (18 and over) – £20; Student – £10 (Valid student ID required); Child – £5; Under 6 – Free; Family (2 adults + 3 children) – £45; Parking will be charged at a nominal fee of £1. Programmes will be available at £2.50
The club is currently finalising their season ticket packages and is also looking for sponsorship from businesses or individuals.
