Bill Dobie is one of Cumbria’s most successful entrepreneurs with involvement in the motor trade, hotels and construction.
He’s a man who has given few interviews over the years but this week he met up with an old school pal, Cumbria Crack’s sports writer John Walsh, for a chat.
The pair covered their respective school days at Dearham and Ellenborough, before both went to Cockermouth Grammar School where one teacher in particular thought Bill was going to be a success – while most of the others thought he wasn’t clever enough to be there!
Bill recounts his early days working at the steelworks and how a small garage operation developed into a successful local franchise.
He also recalls his days as a rally driver, during which time he won a national title – and why he quit after five years.
Workington Town rugby league club is also close to his heart, and what it offers the community, and says how he provides financial assistance without a daily hands-on commitment.
During the conversation he tells of his pride at acquiring the iconic Trout Hotel in Cockermouth to add to the Washington Central Hotel, which he built in the 1980s.
He’s also involved in the construction industry and mentions his latest commitment to providing top-of-the-range accommodation in Cockermouth – although it’s not been without controversy.
