Former Workington Reds wing-back Matty Clarke is on the move again.

The 24-year-old joined Lancaster City in June but will finish the season at Clitheroe.

Clarke, signed by Danny Grainger in his first spell in charge of the Reds, clocked-up 130 appearances for Workington over a four-year period.

During his spell with the west Cumbrians Clarke scored two goals, one of which against Warrington Rylands in the 2021-22 season was crowned goal of the season.

Clarke had previously played for Kendal Town, Penrith and Bradford Park Avenue and was the first summer signing for City manager Mark Fell.

In recent weeks Fell has left the Giant Axe and been replaced last month by former Reds boss Chris Willcock, who had Clarke in his side at Borough Park.

Indeed Clarke was a virtual ever-present under Willcock at Borough Park with 42 appearances and both his Reds goals were scored in that season.

The first at Newcastle Town to earn a draw and the second a sensational effort to earn another draw against eventual champions Warrington Rylands.

In 2019-20, arriving at Reds as a winger from Bradford, he made 23 starts with 12 sub appearances.

The truncated season produced seven starts and seven as a sub while his last campaign, the promotion season back under Grainger, yielded 23 starts with 16 subs appearances.

Clitheroe are currently lying sixth in the NPL West Division and are pushing for a play-off place for the second year in a row.

They have suffered a number of injury set-backs in recent weeks and the move for Clarke has been the result of those.

Clarke made 20 appearances for Lancaster and was named their Player of the Month for January, but he was left out of the starting line-up against Reds last week in the 1-1 draw.

He was part of a strong ex-Reds contingent at Lancaster which included Brad Carroll, Nico Evangelinos, Kyle Brownhill and Niall Cowperthwaite.
