Workington’s disappointing conclusion to the season continued at Borough Park where they lost 3-0 to promotion-chasing Marine.
The Liverpool side was taking another firm step towards a promotion play-off place with what proved to be a comfortable win.
After a fairly even first-half, in which Marine had edged in front, they scored a second from a penalty early in the second half and were in complete control as a result.
To complete another miserable afternoon for Workington they had Conor Tinnion sent off for a second yellow after 64 minutes and sank to another defeat, still with two more League games to go.
Workington keeper Jim Atkinson made the one save in the first-half to deny Owen Robinson when put through one-on-one.
But Robinson made amends when he drew two defenders and slipped in Bobby Grant for the opening goal on 28 minutes.
Marine keeper Bobby Jones was never extended at all throughout the 90 minutes and the best opportunity for Workington to get back into the game came from a deep first-half corner from Tinnion.
It arrived invitingly at the far post but was missed by both Steven Rigg and Lewis Reilly who had escaped the Marine defence.
When Robinson slotted home the second goal early in the second half from a penalty, following a foul by Jordan Little, the game was virtually over.
Workington weren’t helped by Tinnion’s dismissal for his second yellow in the space of a few minutes and the comfortable victory was wrapped-up by skipper Josh Wardle with a low shot through a crowded penalty area which found the bottom corner.
Manager Danny Grainger said: “It was another frustrating afternoon. We were in the contest at half-time but I’m afraid the second-half just wasn’t good enough.”
