Youngsters officially opened this year’s Keswick Mountain Festival.

The year nine pupils from Keswick School also made colourful windsocks and flags erected in Crow Park to celebrate aspects of the festival, which began today, Friday, May 17.

The festival, which has returned after a year’s break, will welcome thousands of visitors, with sporting events, outdoor activities, live entertainment, speakers, taster sessions, exhibitor stands, the ever-popular KMF Accessible Adventure Zone and camping for all of the family.

It is based in Crow Park on the shore of Derwentwater.

The pupils have been working on the Keswick Mountain Festival textiles project since the start of the academic year.

They have designed and made a variety of windsocks and flags which have taken pride of place in the festival village.

Festival director Nicola Meadley and design technology teacher Kate Jackson joined the youngsters and their creations to officially open the festival to visitors at noon today.

Nicola said: “It was brilliant to work with Kate and her students on this project. It’s really important that Keswick Mountain Festival has strong engagement with the local community and this initiative with Keswick School is a great example of how we do that.

“The children came up with some wonderful designs, which add colour and atmosphere to the Festival Village, and will be seen by thousands of visitors over the weekend. If you’re in the vicinity, come along and have a look for yourself!”

Kate added: “We have been so excited to be part of Keswick Mountain Festival this year. It’s just delightful to see the flags and windsocks showcasing the students’ work and helping to create the festival vibe.”
