Cumbria is preparing for one of the busiest weekends of the year.

Appleby Horse Fair has got underway and this weekend, the Great North Swim at Windermere and Dave Day in Barrow – celebrating the life of Hairy Biker Dave Myers – takes place.

Cumbria police said they were prepared for the weekend.

There will be an increased visible policing presence across the county, including operational support from Cheshire Constabulary, to keep the public safe across the county’s road network.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Dave Stalker said: “We look forward to welcoming a large number of visitors to Cumbria in what will undoubtedly be a busy weekend for most of the county.

“The increased police presence in Cumbria is to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.

“The number of visitors expected also means our transport networks will be busier than usual and, along with our partners, we are encouraging people to plan their journeys in advance.

“Public safety is our number one priority and we will have officers at the events to provide help, advice and reassurance.”
