
Voters in the Cumberland Council ward of Harraby North in Carlisle are being advised to be ready for a local election this month.
It takes place on June 27 and follows the death of Councillor Cyril Weber in April.
Four candidates are standing for the ward. They are:
- Peri Conner, the Green Party
- Rob Currie, the Conservative Party
- Justin McDermott, the Labour Party
- Sarah Wills, the Liberal Democrats
Key deadlines for voters
Applications to register to vote must be made by midnight on Tuesday, June 11.
Applications can be made online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
Applications, amendments or cancellations of postal votes must be made by 5pm on Wednesday, June12. Details on how to do this can be found at www.cumberland.gov.uk/voting-and-elections/apply-postal-or-proxy-vote
Postal votes
Postal voters now need to provide their National Insurance number alongside their date of birth and signature when applying.
Anyone without a National Insurance number should contact the elections team at Cumberland Council.
Postal voters living in the Harraby North ward are also advised that they will receive two postal vote packs – one for the Harraby North ward election, and one for the General Election.
These voters are also advised to check the details on the ballot paper to confirm which election they are voting in and to note that the date by which the postal votes must be returned will be different.
The easiest way to return a postal vote is to use the pre-paid Royal Mail envelope provided. Separate envelopes should be used for each ballot paper.
Photo ID
Electors now have to show photo ID when voting in a polling station. There are a number of accepted forms of photo ID which include:
- Passport issued in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, British Overseas Territory, an EEA state or a Commonwealth country
- Driving licence issued by the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or EEA state
- A Blue Badge
- Older persons bus pass
- Disabled persons bus pass
- Identity card bearing the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram (a PASS card).
Anyone who does not have an acceptable form of photo ID, can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.

Applying for a postal or proxy vote
Applications for a Voter Authority Certificate or an Anonymous Elector’s Document valid for this election must be made by 5pm on Wednesday June 19.
