Saturday saw the start of the show season with action across the border in Northumberland at the Roman Wall Show, as well as down near Tebay at the Greenholme Show.

The Roman Wall show got things off to an early start with the senior hounds slipping at 11.30am and Rodney Raider was the odds on favourite with the bookies.

There was also support for Huntsman’s Rebel and Sarah Jane who were not far behind in the betting.

As they showed it was Rodney Raider and kennel mate Sarah Jane who were heading up the race and they came on to take first and second for the Dearham kennel of Joe Abram and Nicola McMaster.

The win for Rodney Raider takes him to ten points with nearest rival Winterfell opting to run at the Greenholme show.

Denise and Jenny Bland and Jim and Alan Little’s Huntsman’s Rebel finished a close third but just couldn’t make up the ground like she did on Wednesday night when she caught Silver Dream just before the line.

The Lindsay sisters Inspect claimed fourth ticket with Martin, Joanna, Molly and Teddy Burrows Thorn Thunder taking fifth ticket and Neil and Gillian Brown’s Hey Mac in sixth.

The open pups were next with a small field of only seven runners. Huntsman’s Time was the odds-on favourite but she hasn’t appeared to be her usual self the last couple of runs.

As they came through the wall on to the finish it was Huntsman’s Time and Lassie who were neck and neck and it was Lassie who just got up to win for the Bell family. The win is Lassie’s third win of the season and moves her up to fourth place in the puppy championship.

Denise and her team had to settle for second place with Huntsman’s Time who was followed home by Minnie Million for the Listers.

Close behind her was George McGimpsey and Gillian and Millie Telford’s two hounds, Millie’s Lass and Millie’s Lad. Claiming sixth ticket was the big fine hound Leo The Lightening Bolt for Tony, Marlene, Connor and Carter Irving who is starting to show improvement.

The Puppy Maiden race was next and it turned out to be a one, two, three for the Satterthwaite and Burrow family with Thorn Heart taking first, Thorn Star in second and Thorn Soul finishing in third place.

In the open restricted race the Bell family were in luck again and their hound Ron came in first for an easy win from Eden Romina in second place for David Clifford. Thorn Pop in third continues to be consistent for Colin Satterthwaite and notched up more points in the open restricted points competition to extend her lead even further.

Tallulah did well and finished in fourth place for Carol Tunstall, with Stuart and Jacob Jeynes’s Off-Spring in fifth while the last ticket went to Christopher Henderson with Light Up.

The last race of the day was for the Veterans and the Bell family’s Adele was the odds on favourite as the kennel looked for a treble.

Adele didn’t disappoint and came home in first place much to the Bell’s delight. Sarah Harper’s Delta Script was, second followed by Caroline Graham’s Hunter’s Flame. Brian and Erin Rowlandson’s Blue Diamond finished in fourth place. The win for Adele took her clear at the top of the Veteran points competition.

It has been a long time since there has been trails at the Greenholme Show and it was down to the hard work of Robert Reid and friends and the good will of the local farmers who managed to get the trails back at the show.

Things got underway with the senior hounds and Winterfell was the favourite with the bookies.

However, the trail had to be made void as the hounds were under time. The trail can only be confirmed as a trail once 25 minutes have passed, if the hounds come in before this time then the race is made void. It was a shame as Winterfell did cross the line in first place.

Next to slip were the open pups. Sonny Bill would have been odds on to win given recent performances but as they showed it was Barry Laidler and Caroline Clough’s Snowfell who crossed in first place followed by Sonny Bill in second.

Barry and Caroline also claimed third place with Ben and then it was a Miterdale affair with Sophie Steele and Co taking the next three tickets with Miterdale Rumble, Ruler and Rambler.

The win for Snowfell takes him to one place behind his sibling Lassie in the puppy championship table.

Next to slip were the open maidens and it was Willie and Daphne Marks’ Summer Spirit who came in first from another of Sophie Steele’s kennel Miterdale Dust. The Neale and Bryden kennel took the next two tickets with Eagle Rock and Eagle Star with Sophie and sister Katie bagging their fifth ticket of the day with Miterdale Honesty. Huntsman’s Delight for the Little family finished well to take sixth.

Eleanor’s Lass for Brian Graham and Eleanor Chisholm finished well to win the Open restricted race with Miterdale Duchess for Denis Pear and Jackie Gill winning the veterans race.

That success for Miterdale Duchess moves her to joint top of the table following the win by Adele at the Roman Wall Show so things remain tight at the top.

With the first two shows complete it was a day of multiple tickets for a few lucky kennels with a one two in the senior hounds for the Dearham kennel; a treble for the Bell family from Yorkshire; a one two three for the Satterthwaite and Burrow families, and nearly a double for Barry Laidler and Caroline Clough at Greenholme.

Although Sophie Steele and Co didn’t bag a first ticket they made up for it with six tickets if you count Kinniside Bobby. So well done to all of those kennels and anyone else who managed to get tickets.

Action returns to Wardhall again on Monday evening with another three race card with the first trail starting at 6.45pm.
