Work to create Carlisle’s Southern Gateway will start next week.

The project by Cumberland Council, is on the city’s English Street and aims to regenerate the southern entrance to the city. It is expected to be completed by spring 2025.

It will begin on Monday, June 17. Story Contracting Limited will remove four of the five bus shelters on English Street, with the Denton Holme bus stop remaining for the first few weeks.

The new permanent Denton Holme bus stop on Victoria Viaduct is expected to be completed and operational by mid-August 2024.

Other bus routes will maintain their current detours, turning at Botchergate and using Lowther Street bus stops, until English Street work is completed by the end of spring 2025.

To lay granite setts on English Street, the road will be fully closed for 10 weeks starting in mid-February 2025. Exact timings will be confirmed as work progresses, with adjustments as needed.

A section of the West Walls car park will be designated as a compound for the work.

While efforts will be made to minimise disruption in the car park, access to the steps located in the centre of the car park will be restricted, Cumberland Council said.

An event for local businesses and residents who have properties near the work site will be held in the Merlot Room at the Carlisle Station Hotel on Thursday, June 13.

People can drop in anytime between 3pm and 7pm.

The Southern Gateway is part of a larger regeneration initiative, linking with other key projects in Carlisle.

The Devonshire Street project is expected to conclude by summer 2024, and the Carlisle Station Gateway project, involving partial pedestrianisation of Court Square and enhanced accessibility from George Square, is set to continue until 2027.

The Market Square and Greenmarket regeneration project will start in summer 2024, creating an events space.

The relocation of the war memorial, with support from the British Legion, will also take place in summer 2024 and be completed in time for Remembrance Day. The project has a completion date of spring 2025.
