We asked the candidates for Westmorland & Lonsdale if they were successful in this year’s General Election, what would the constituency look like in five years’ time.

Parliament runs on a fixed term of five years – so unless another General Election is called in the meantime, or other events force a by-election, the person chosen as MP for Westmorland & Lonsdale has until 2029 to make a difference.

We asked every candidate we have been able to make contact with – and would encourage anyone standing in this constituency to get in touch.

Here’s what Westmorland & Lonsdale candidates had to say – in their own words:

Tim Farron, of the Liberal Democrats

Tim Farron

I am not a betting man and I’m rubbish at predicting the future, but I honestly believe that Westmorland can have a bright and brilliant future where:

  • We have the homes we need so our young people can stay, work and raise a family here, and so that our communities are vibrant and we save them from becoming second home ghost towns
  • People aren’t forced to travel out of the county for cancer treatment or to see a dentist on the NHS
  • Our vital GP surgeries are given the resources they need so people are given an appointment when they need one
  • Our precious lakes and rivers are free from sewage so they can be enjoyed by people and animals
  • People are able to travel around our rural community thanks to more frequent and cheaper bus and rail services
  • Our farmers are given the support they need to carry on feeding us and delivering the environmental goods we need to tackle climate change

No one person can deliver all of the above on their own, but working together I’m confident we can once again make our own luck and get positive things done for Westmorland.

Pippa Smith, of the Labour Party

Pippa Smith, Labour

I want us to feel the benefits locally of Labour’s first steps for change: economic stability, lower NHS waiting times, better border security, cleaner energy, a return to community policing and more teachers in schools.

Matty Jackman, of the Conservative Party

I envision our constituency thriving in ways that will be noticed and make a difference in our everyday lives.

We will see a community where local potential is allowed to flourish, with affordable housing projects, ensuring that families and young people can live and work here.

Our economy will be buoyant, with small businesses flourishing and new enterprises attracted to our region through supportive policies and improved infrastructure.

Agriculture will remain the backbone of our local economy, with farmers supported by fair policies and innovative practices that boost productivity while protecting our environment.

We will see the fruits of our commitment to sustainability, with cleaner rivers and lakes, healthier, more diverse ecosystems, and a thriving natural landscape that supports both our quality of life and the tourism industry.

Education will have received a significant boost, with enhanced facilities and programmes that ensure our children receive top-quality education right here, at home.

Connectivity, both digital and physical, will be improved. Our roads will be safer and more efficient, and high-speed Internet will reach even the most rural areas, enabling businesses to operate more effectively and residents to connect.

Healthcare access will be expanded, with modernised facilities providing timely and comprehensive care. The NHS will be stronger and more resilient.

In five years, our constituency will be a place where community spirit thrives, where people feel secure and supported, and where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. This is the future I am committed to working towards. But I need your support!

James Townley, of Reform UK

James Townley

In five years, I envision Westmorland & Lonsdale as a thriving community where our services operate smoothly, free from the threat of closure. Investments in our hospital and facilities will ensure that we can meet the needs of our growing population without the need to travel to another county. Young people will be able to live and work here, with access to affordable housing, which is currently lacking for first-time homeowners.

Our waters will be pristine, free from sewage, and our wild fish populations will rebound, creating a healthier environment. Farmers will be successfully farming, providing greater levels of locally-sourced food. The tourism industry will flourish, working in harmony with residents and bringing economic benefits to the area. Our high streets will be bustling with shops and innovative business ideas, fostering a vibrant community spirit.

Moreover, the business culture in Cumbria will grow, creating opportunities and driving the local economy forward. This balanced blend of thriving local services, environmental sustainability, and economic growth will make Westmorland & Lonsdale a desirable place to live, work, and visit. Our community will be one where residents take pride in their surroundings, young people see a future, and visitors are welcomed into a well-preserved, bustling, and innovative region.

Through strategic investments and community collaboration, Westmorland & Lonsdale will become a model of sustainable development, balancing the needs of its residents with the preservation of its natural beauty and heritage. This vision will guide us as we work towards a brighter future for all.

Phil Clayton, of the Green Party

In five years we will be well on the way to carbon-neutral economy.

Renewable electrical power will be the default, and electric cars and public transport the norm. We will be addressing the shortage of affordable housing by building new home to rent and buy which are energy efficient.

Existing homes will be upgraded improve energy efficiency, and so directly reduce the cost of living.

Investment in renewables will have created thousands of highly skilled, well paid jobs.

Taxes on the richest 1% will have been used to rebuild public services, address some of the impacts of climate change, and improve bio-diversity.

Izzy Solabarrieta, the Heritage Party

If I am elected I’d like to take my constituency back to a time of freedom, in which life is not micro-managed by a totalitarian government and council. I’d like to see the petty regulations that have been steadily pushed on to almost every area of our lives abolished and an end to the constant extra taxation in the form of fines and penalties.

I’d like to think the corruption which drips from the top down throughout society could be stemmed, and, with quality replacements in place, we’d enjoy a culture of excellence instead of the culture of mediocrity that has crept upon us. Corporations would be held accountable – our rivers could finally run clean.

With real support for farmers, and the freedom to actually farm, Cumbria could be almost self-sufficient in some food production. Net zero makes no sense and would make life terrible, so with that scrapped people could begin to enjoy life again.

Children would be free to be kids, the lessons that sexualise them and confuse them about their gender would be stopped. The housing, health and social care crises could be vastly relieved, because the big questions about why exactly we have these crises, with so many people in need, would finally be being asked.

If people saw a government in place filled with people who actually cared and actually did something, imagine how inspired people would feel. Instead of just left feeling hopeless, ripped off, lied to and let down again and again
