Liberal Democrat candidate for Penrith & Solway, Julia Aglionby, is undertaking a mammoth cycle ride around the constituency as part of her election campaign.
One of her stops was the seaside village of Allonby – which is popular with visitors all year round.
However, she said: “Allonby isn’t classed as a core tourist destination from Cumbria Tourism so misses out on essential support.”
“The local council in 2022 sold off one set of the public loos and these have been closed ever since depriving visitors of an essential resource.”
She visited the village’s Twentymans and said: “I had a good chat with one of the owners as well as enjoying a most delicious winter berry and cream cone.
“Twentymans has been serving ices for over 100 years and is a Cumbrian institution much loved. It is though finding business conditions challenging.”
She also visited Blue Dial Farm.
She said: “Cumbria is the second largest producer of milk in the UK and I was delighted to enjoy Cumbrian dairy products today… first stop was Moody Cow at Blue Dial Farm.
“Here Clare and Joseph Hetherington are stars at stacking businesses – farming, caravan park, education centre and a vending machine for local produce including their own milk.
“Onwards we cycled to Silloth and met up with Vicky Hope at the Fairy Dust Emporium – I have never had a banana split quite like it as the key magic ingredient was Unicorn ice cream from Temun Farm, another Cumbrian dairy farm.”
