Deliberate damage caused to road closures near Kendal

Deliberate damage has been caused to two bridge closures near Kendal.

The Brigsteer and Underbarrow bridges, which run over the A591, were closed on June 12 as a precautionary measure after structural issues were discovered.

South Lakes Police said they had been informed by Westmorland & Furness Council about the deliberate damage.

Fourteen diversion signs have been removed or damaged and 11 fence panels damaged.

They said: “These road closures are undoubtedly disruptive to many, ourselves included but are essential to maintain public safety. It is not acceptable for individuals to not only move the barriers put in place but to then cause significant damage to council property.

“Several pieces of equipment have been rendered useless and will have to be replaced ultimately at the expense of the taxpayer.”

Westmorland & Furness Council said: “We’re disappointed to share that our road closure fencing and signs on Brigsteer and Underbarrow Bridges, that is there to protect the safety of our residents and road users, has been severely vandalised to point of needing to be replaced.

“The decision to close Brigsteer and Underbarrow Bridges was based on structural concerns, requiring the Council to remove all applied load by closing both bridges to pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

“The council has had to divert resources to replace the 11 damaged fence panels and arranging for lifting equipment to remove the concrete barriers and reinstate the closure.

“A further 14 diversion signs have also had to be replaced due to damage, with some found in ditches and hedges, and two signs had been turned round causing confusion for drivers and pedestrians.

“We appreciate that these closures, and the diversions, are causing inconvenience for local residents, communities, businesses and road users, however this action has been essential and our statutory duty to ensure your safety.

“Cumbria police have been informed and as a result, will be increasing their patrols in the area.

“Please respect our road closures and follow the vehicle and pedestrian diversions.”
