West Cumbria’s finest Dan Bewley, fresh from his Speedway of Nations triumph on Saturday night, completed a quick double at Northside.
An impeccable performance from the Maryport racer saw him win all five races, and then the final, in the Ben Fund Bonanza staged by Workington Comets.
Although he’s practiced at the Northside track before he’s never raced competitively before and his debut appearance was an awesome display.
He looked in the mood from the start and broke the track record in the very first heat after making a cracking start. The best time round the track for four laps now stands at 55.1.
Times got progressively slower as the meeting progressed, not helped by the arrival of rain, and when he won the final the time was 58.0.
Nearest to Bewley (15) in qualification were Comets young Finn Antti Vuolas, Redcar’s Danny King and the King’s Lynn rider, Czech star Jan Kvech all who had 12.
In the final Bewley got away well, pursued by Vuolas before Kvech went past into second and King retired with bike problems.
It stayed that way to the end so the podium included a west Cumbrian and former Comet and a current Comet along with Kvech from the Czech Republic.
Comets captain Craig Cook was a late withdrawal because of a back injury but Sam McGurk was down as a reserve and got two outings, without scoring.
It also proved a big day for Laylan Richardson of the Meteors who was also a reserve and was called upon twice.
His big moment came in heat 19 when he followed home Norick Blodorn after McGurk was left at the tapes and Ben Barker lost his chain guard on the way to the tapes.
Charles Wright and Connor Bailey were two former Comets in the line-up, both team-mates at Redcar.
Wright scored ten points from two wins, a second and two thirds while Bailey’s afternoon ended early.
He was third behind Bewley in the first race but then in heat seven he slid-off into the fence and was excluded, He didn’t re-appear although his absence was due more to a damaged bike than any injury.
