An inquest has been opened into a Barrow-born man who died in Nepal after a trek to Mount Everest base camp with his partner.

Cockermouth Coroner’s Court heard this morning that Callum Michael Clarke, aged 35, tragically died on May 21 this year.

Ms Margaret Taylor, an assistant coroner for Cumbria, noted that the place of death was given as Thamel Bhagwan Bahalmin in the Nepalese capital city of Kathmandu.

Mr Clarke was said to have been a fire service crew commander by occupation.

Ms Taylor outlined some brief circumstances as she formally opened an inquest into Mr Clarke’s death.

“I have been told that the deceased was on holiday with his partner at the time of his death,” said Ms Taylor during a short hearing.

“They had done base camp of Mount Everest. That night he had gone out with his partner for a meal and a few drinks. The deceased’s partner went to bed and the deceased stayed out for a further few drinks and was found dead the next morning.

A post mortem examination had been completed in Nepal, and the cause of Mr Clarke’s death was, said the coroner, at this stage “unascertained”, pending toxicology test results.

“Because there will inevitably be a delay in obtaining relevant information from Nepal, I am going to suspend this inquest so we will not be allocating a date for the resumed hearing,” Ms Taylor concluded.

A firm date for a full hearing will be set in due course.

The inquest heard Mr Clarke was born in Barrow-in-Furness and lived latterly at Carnforth.

Evidence had been provided to confirm Mr Clarke’s identity.
