Poole’s emphatic 53-37 win at Workington yesterday stretched their advantage at the top of the Cab Direct Championship to four points.
The Pirates completed a perfect two-day Northern tour following their victory at Glasgow the previous evening.
It was a first home defeat in the league for the Comets, for whom captain Craig Cook scored 10+1 from six rides, following his top-scoring performance at Scunthorpe on Friday night.
Comets boss James Denham said: “The last two days have been disappointing, to not pick up any points at all, and it makes the play-offs a bit tough, but it’s still doable.
“We’ve still got Redcar home and away next week, and Berwick, so we’ve got to give everything in those meetings and hope the teams behind us slip up. We just need to regroup next week and start again.”
It’s a busy period coming-up with back-to-back meetings twice – first with Redcar Bears on Friday and Saturday (August 2 and 3) and then Berwick Bandits (10 and 11).
The latest round of the British Youth Championships were staged at Northside after the Comets meeting and the highly rated William Cairns (500cc) made it a weekend double, whilst Charlie Fletcher took victory in the 125cc support class.
