More details have been released after a man fell at a Lake District beauty spot made popular by social media.

The Great North air Ambulance Service said it was called out to the incident, at Fisher Gill on Helvellyn on Saturday and airlifted a man to hospital.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team said it was their third call out to Fisher Gill this year.

The team said: “The man was on the edge of what has become known as the infinity pool in one of the mountain streams descending from the Helvellyn ridge.

“Despite there being numerous such pools in the Lake District this one has seen increased popularity due to social media.

“The man reached out his hand to help his partner but slipped and fell around 25m (82ft) landing in the shallow pool below.

“Bystanders helped get the man out of the water to the edge of the stream. GNAAS Helimed 58 was on scene before the team arrived and treated the casualty.

“Because of the likely severity of the injuries and the possible requirement to winch the casualty from the gill Coastguard Rescue 199 was also asked to attend.”

The team managed to carry the man on a stretcher to the Great North Air Ambulance while the Coastguard helicopter stood by in case its crew was needed.

The man was flown to Newcastle’s RVI by the Great North Air Ambulance.
