Workington’s bid for play-off glory came to an end when they suffered home and away defeats to Poole in the semi-final.
However, manager James Denham insists it’s still been a successful first season back at Championship level.
He said: “We were beaten by the better side on the day so credit to Poole and we wish them luck. It was always going to be tough, but we just couldn’t handle their firepower towards the end of the meeting.
“But we really shouldn’t underestimate what we have achieved this year.
“Reaching the play-offs in our debut year in the Championship is a fantastic achievement, and also finding riders like Tate (Zischke) and Antti (Vuolas) is a great start for us.”
The last to start team building after they were moved into the Championship, Workington weren’t given much chance of success.
The general view of the Comets team was that they were booked for the wooden spoon.
But the ability and promise of Australian Zischke and Finn Vuolas have been great adverts for the Comets management’s ability to unearth gems through their own scouting systems.
The return to form of skipper Craig Cook and the renaissance of Troy Batchelor were also important factors in Workington’s good showing.
