The first ever women’s/girls rugby union touch league started at Cockermouth rugby club and was blessed with lovely autumnal weather.
This initiative has grown over the last couple of years to the stage where the participants wanted a more competitive opportunity.
The organising group, made up of representatives from each participating club, has agreed the rules based on touch union from last season and constructed a league, based on one round per month.
These rounds are short games in a round robin format.
To help raise the profile of the competition the games are scheduled as curtain raisers to the senior men’s games on a Saturday afternoon, with a couple of Friday nights under floodlights thrown in.
After round one, Arlecdon sit top thanks to a very strong final game which increased their try count to give them the lead over Cockermouth, who showed their continued improvement with the best defensive record.
Wigton, Keswick and Silloth provided tough opponents in all their games and enjoyed the opportunity to gain a bit more experience of the high paced matches.
All the games were played at high speeds, with good skill, accuracy and great spirit, well-refereed by the two officials who were also new to the game.
Penny Brough, the Cockermouth Wasps captain, said: “On behalf of all the girls/women please can you pass on our thanks to everyone at the club that has helped out.
“It was a great day and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the club and the people behind it.”
All the teams will now be busy working on their skills and tactics ready for round two at Arlecdon in October.
