Wigton maintained their 100% start to the Counties 1 League season with a convincing 66-12 victory over Windermere.
However, the score did not reflect the game with Windermere providing stiff resistance for the first 30 minutes with strong carries from their big forwards and the stand-off making a few half breaks.
Wigton played with a strong wind behind their backs in the first 40 minutes and turned round at half time a 19-5 lead.
This might have caused some concern to the Lowmoor Road faithful seated in the newly sponsored Wilderness Way Grandstand as the visitors had displayed good ball retention and phase play from inside their own half.
But the second half was a different story as the Greens moved the ball wide and created several opportunities, scoring tries at regular intervals as the hosts tired.
The Wigton try scorers were Fergus Ledingham (2), Josh Sloan (2), Stu Carruthers, Charlie Bell, Stephen Harris, James Paisley, Matty Harrison and Cory Bouch. Elliot Armstrong converted eight.
Young Josh Sloan was awarded Player of the match and received his meat platter from Paisley’s butchers.
This Saturday Wigton are on the road to Ambleside, with a 1.30pm start due to their hosts holding a function later in the evening.
With a few players unavailable this will give the Wigton coaching staff a chance to provide opportunities to other members of the squad.
Wigton share the lead with Penrith 2nds who had a walkover when Aspatria 2nds were again unable to put out a side together.
Sadly, only three weeks into the season, there were two other walkovers. Creighton, after conceding over 100 points last week, pulled out of their follow-up game at Whitehaven.
Workington, who had opened the season with a win, were also unable to fulfil their fixture at Hawcoat Park.

St Benedict’s got the better of Millom 25-13 after a hard-fought contest with tries from Kurt Maudling, Jaylen Conway, Harvey Smith and Aaron Burns. Aiden Pirie converted one and Fletcher Creasey landed a penalty.
Egremont were the day’s biggest winners, beating Ambleside 74-5 while Cockermouth, as we reported earlier beat Keswick 2nds 55-12.
