He died after sustaining serious head injuries in an incident on land not far from the A66, north of Warcop.

Whitehaven Miners, in a Facebook post, said: “RIP wee man. Our thoughts are with your family, coaches and team mates.”

Many football teams from across the area have sent their condolences and Richard Lewthwaite, chairman of West Cumbria Youth League, said: “Everyone at the West Cumbria Youth League was devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Jay.

“A bright young lad at the beginning of his football journey. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, team mates and all at Whitehaven Miners Football Club.”

orkington Comets supporters club has set up an online fundraiser to help support his family.

It said: “Over the past few days the news has broken that one of our own Jay Cartmell has tragically lost his life.

“Jay was a regular at Workington speedway with his family each week having recently taken up speedway much to his family’s joy, seeing him make strides each time he took to the track.

“We want to try and help the family through this awful time by raising funds to help at this time.

Any donations that are made will go directly to the family. Rest in peace Jay, you will be sadly missed!”
