
Tributes have been paid to an eight-year-old boy who died after an incident on a Cumbrian farm over the weekend.
Jay Cartmell, of Frizington, died following the incident on Saturday.
He died after sustaining serious head injuries in an incident on land not far from the A66, north of Warcop.
A pupil at Jericho School, the youngster was a keen and talented football player, who was part of the Whitehaven Miners junior side.
Whitehaven Miners, in a Facebook post, said: “RIP wee man. Our thoughts are with your family, coaches and team mates.”
Many football teams from across the area have sent their condolences and Richard Lewthwaite, chairman of West Cumbria Youth League, said: “Everyone at the West Cumbria Youth League was devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Jay.
“A bright young lad at the beginning of his football journey. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, team mates and all at Whitehaven Miners Football Club.”
orkington Comets supporters club has set up an online fundraiser to help support his family.
It said: “Over the past few days the news has broken that one of our own Jay Cartmell has tragically lost his life.
“Jay was a regular at Workington speedway with his family each week having recently taken up speedway much to his family’s joy, seeing him make strides each time he took to the track.
“We want to try and help the family through this awful time by raising funds to help at this time.
Any donations that are made will go directly to the family. Rest in peace Jay, you will be sadly missed!”

A 60-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. He has been bailed.
Police said they were continuing their enquiries into the incident and encouraged anyone who may have seen the incident or the moments leading up to it to come forward.
