Catering and hospitality students from Lakes College served up Christmas lunch for 130 Distington pensioners.
The event was held at the Lillyhall college’s Graduate Restaurant.
John Cowen, treasurer of the Distington Senior Citizens Committee, said: “We have been coming to Lakes College for as long as I can remember. It’s perfect for us as the college can host more than 130 people and we have a full three-course meal.
“I could not praise or fault the learners and staff enough – they are excellent from the moment we walk through the door. Everything is just perfect.
“After we are done having food, the learners come and sit and chat with everyone, getting to know them, and taking part in the entertainment. It’s a day that a lot of people in the community look forward to all year.”
Volunteers from the area and the college’s facilities team played a vital role in preparing the canteen and decorating the venue.
The learners showcased their culinary and hospitality skills, creating a memorable experience for all that attended.

Charles Milne, Level 2 catering learner, said: “I was on the front of house team, serving everyone their food and helping in any way I could.
“The pensioners were really nice and friendly. It was a really fun event. It lets the pensioners come out and socialise with others in a nice atmosphere with good food and the opportunity to relax.”
Aiden Creer, Level 2 catering learner, added: “Having the event helps us because when we work in the catering industry in the future, we will experience rush-hour services and large-scale events and parties.
“This gives us a chance to practice serving for a large number of people.”
