Plans have been submitted for an energy storage system near Kendal, capable of powering over 300,000 homes for two hours.
Net Zero Nineteen Ltd has submitted plans to Westmorland and Furness Council to build the energy storage system on land at Eskrigg End Road, near Old Hutton.
It would include up to 100 energy storage units to take energy from the electricity grid when demand is higher or supply is lower.
The proposed development has a total capacity of up to 100MW and would be capable of powering 323,795 homes for two hours.
The firm said: “The proposed development facilitates renewable generation by creating much needed flexibility and applicability. It is therefore a vital part of a low carbon energy system and an important piece of infrastructure.
“This is critical for the transition to a low carbon future, as outlined in local and national policy. Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power are naturally intermittent.”
If given the go-ahead, work to build the system would take around 12 months and it would have an operational life of around 40 years.
