Workington Darts Organisation is one of the groups bringing darts back into the mainstream in Cumbria.

Set up in December 2023 by a group of men who wanted to revive the sport in the Workington area and bring more opportunities to players of all standards, it has gone from strength to strength.

Since then, it has hosted two sell-out seasons of the Jemcare Singles League, a RAF Engineering Ranking Series and many one day competitions.

It also teamed up with the Whitehaven-based Marras and Arras to introduce the Jam Cup, a head-to-head between the two organisations which takes place every year donating all proceeds to charity.

Workington Darts Organisation is the current holder of the trophy with a 12-4 win over the Marras in June 2024, raising £950 for Macmillan Cancer Support in the process.

This year, the cup competition will be held in Whitehaven on Saturday June 14 to play the Marras on their home soil for the Shaun Weaver Trophy.

The organisation said: “As well as running our various leagues we also run competitions most Saturday afternoons at our home venue Workington Royal British Legion.

“Since the meteoric rise of Luke Littler we have had many youth players coming along to take part both in our open competitions and in youth specific competitions.

“Our latest winner was Max Vaughan at just 10 years old. Max defeated Thomas Mitchell in the final on February 15.

“At Christmas time we also held a darts marathon for the No Rainbows Without Rain Charity raising £755 at Workington RBL.

“Our 2024-2025 season comes to a close this coming Tuesday at Workington Royal British Legion with the last night of fixtures of the Jemcare Care Agency Singles League.

“Our two winners of the league are already confirmed via points attained after very successful campaigns for both with Mike Adams wining the A league and Ben Steele winning the B league. We are proud to be paying out £1,500 in prize money this season to our players.

“Following the conclusion of the league we will be holding a few open competitions on Tuesdays and Saturdays which will be announced on the Workington Darts Organisations Facebook page.

“We would like to thank everyone for their kind support and we look forward to returning with an expanded league in September taking our capacity up to 42 players.

“We are also excited to announce that we will be holding Tuesday evening round robin format competitions with up to £200 prize money per night on offer!

“Our league’s prize money is also set to increase to £1,800. Anyone interested in playing in any of our competitions or next seasons league is encouraged to message our Facebook account or pop into Workington RBL for a chat on a Tuesday evening.”

Darts is gaining in popularity across the county – with other groups hitting the bullseye with the sport.
