For the first time in five years, Workington Zebras registered their third successive Counties 1 victory as they maintained their Renaissance with a 39-21 victory over Ambleside Centurions at The Ellis, writes John Hastings.
Played in glorious sunshine, it was an open-ended contest that was a perfect advert for summer rugby union
Scott Campbell helped himself to a good hat-trick, with Dan Hargreaves crossing the whitewash twice and Josh Partridge chipping in with a try himself.
John McCrickerd added three conversions and a penalty.
Ambleside never gave up from kick off to final whistle as they saw the Zebras’ insurgent strides and raised them with clinical attacks of their own, but it was Workington who stepped up a gear in the last 20 minutes to pull clear & seal the points.
The results sees Workington 11th in the Counties 1 table with 24 points, only four points behind Creighton – the Zebras’ final league fixture is a trip to Creighton, where victory could see them snatch 10th place.
