An appeal for information has been issued by police after people claimed on social media that a man was carrying a weapon in Barrow.
Barrow police said it was a top priority to investigate the reports.
They said they were aware of the posts circulating about the man making threats to young people yesterday, Thursday April 24, at around 8.30pm in the area of Abbey Way.
No one was harmed during the incident reported, police said.
Barrow police said: “Officers are currently making enquiries to establish the circumstances of the incident and are appealing for anyone with information to report to police.”
Anyone with any information, or who was in the area of Abbey Way or the Red River Club at around 8.30pm yesterday and may have witnessed the incident, is asked to report to police via 101 referring to log 243 of 24 April.
Barrow police added: “Officers are aware this has caused concern in the community but can assure people that the investigation is a top priority, and all viable lines of enquiry are being pursued.
“We are also aware of speculation that this might be connected to a later incident near Stollers.
“In that case police received a report from a member of the public reporting a male acting suspiciously in the area.
“We can confirm that in this case the male was detained, searched and found not to be in possession of any weapon. That report is not being treated as connected to the incident on Abbey Way.”
