This weekend, people will have the chance to go behind the scenes at a north Cumbrian farm.
Susan’s Farm at Houghton, near Carlisle, will be one of over 250 farms opening their gates to the public for farming’s annual open day on Sunday, June 8.
Open Farm Sunday offers visitors the chance to see farming at first hand, to discover where their food comes from, how it is produced and to meet the people responsible – the farmers.
Susan’s Farm will be open from 11am to 4pm and entry is free.
Visitors can meet this year’s lambs, calves and goslings and see the farm’s wetland, hedges and woodlands.
There will be two farm walks, at 11.30am and one at 2pm where trustee, Julia Aglionby, will take people on a guided walk to meet the livestock and see how the farm works with nature, make hay, look after hedges and visit part of Hadrian’s Wall.
Refreshments, cakes, ice-cream and homemade burgers and sausages on the barbecue will be for sale, as will meat and preserves.
Helen Ward, education manager at Susan’s Farm said: “Open Farm Sunday is a great family day out and offers a unique chance to learn more about all that farmers do and to show your support for British farming.
“On the day members of staff, trustees and many volunteers from the charity, will be on hand to tell you more about the farming industry, show you how your food is produced and what is being done to care for the countryside. And to answers all your questions.”
Kerry Anne Carruthers, Susan’s Farm community engagement lead added: “As a charitable care farm, we pride ourselves on our learning opportunities, teaching about our environment, where meat comes from in farm-to-fork sessions for local primary and secondary schools to supporting adults with their mental health and well-being.”
