Workington’s new tennis courts will be officially opened this weekend.

The courts, in Vulcan Park, will be opened at this year’s Party in the Park event on Saturday, June 7.

Workington mayor David Farrar, will officially open the courts in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at around 11.05am, following the main event opening on stage.

Activities will be led by coaches from Cumbria Tennis, who will be on hand until 200pm, with a number of sessions throughout the day.

From 2pm to 7pm, is a free play session for anyone to bring their own equipment and have a go on the new courts.

Following the launch event, the three new courts will be available to book from 7am to 7pm daily at a rate of £4 per hour. An annual membership is £25.

The booking system will allow reservations up to two weeks in advance through the Workington Town Council website.

Upon booking, participants will receive a unique gate code via email providing access to the courts for their reserved time slot. Players will need to provide their own equipment.

Councillor Farrar said: “I am delighted to see the new tennis courts open and can’t wait to see our community making full use of the new facilities.

“This development forms part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing recreational facilities within the town and promoting active lifestyles among residents.”

The project is part of a £30million nationwide investment by the Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, delivered by the LTA, to refurbish public tennis courts across Great Britain, and open up the sport to many more people.

Cumberland Council also contributed to the project.

Following the official opening of the courts, there will be a free park tennis session every Saturday from 10am to 11am with a Cumbria Tennis coach.
