
Rain and thunderstorm warnings are in place for Cumbria.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain for today, Sunday July 20, from 11am to 10pm.
It said showery outbreaks of rain, heavy and perhaps thundery in places, will move north westwards from late Sunday morning and through the afternoon before gradually easing during the evening.
Accumulations of 10mm to 20mm are expected fairly widely, with a few places potentially receiving as much as 40mm, much of this falling in just a few hours.
This could lead to some surface water flooding.
What should I expect?
- Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
- Spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer
- Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely
- Some interruption to power supplies and other services likely
A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for tomorrow, Monday July 21.
The Met Office has issued the warning from 11am to 9pm.
It said: “Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected on Monday.
“Rainfall amounts will vary from place to place but in some locations 20mm to 40mm is possible within a couple of hours.
“Heavy downpours of rain will be the primary hazard, but lightning strikes are also likely along with the potential for hail and gusty winds.”
What should I expect?
- Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
- There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater or lightning strikes
- There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
- Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
- There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
- There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
