A celebration of Workington RNLI will be held next weekend.
Volunteers from the town’s station will be in Workington town centre on Saturday, May 4, to highlight the work they do as the charity marks its 200th anniversary this year.
There will be performances from the Carnegie Singers and Penrith-based sea shanty group Nobody’s Friends.
Workington RNLI fundraisers will also be there with merchandise which helps keep the charity afloat and people will be able to chat to crew members about what it is like to be part of the charity.
In 2023, Workington RNLI, which is based at the Port of Workington, was called out 21 times to help people in distress.
Across the UK and Ireland the charity’s lifeboats were launched over 9,100 times in 2023, making it the charity’s second-busiest year of the past decade.
Workington RNLI’s volunteer crew is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Tim Chittenden, Workington RNLI’s lifeboat operations manager, said: “This is just one of the events we have planned to mark the 200th anniversary.
“Workington has a proud and long connection with the RNLI, but because we are based at the port, not many people have access to the station.
“We thought we’d bring the RNLI to the them, with a bit of entertainment, in the town centre and make a day of it for all the family.”
The charity has also got a display in the former Akitts shop in Washington Square.
Performances from the Carnegie Singers and Nobody’s Friend will take place at noon, 1pm and 2pm.
