Cumbria Crack FAQs
A little about us
Cumbria Crack is run by editor Nicole Regan and reporter Lucy Edwards.
We both work full-time for Cumbria Crack and love every minute of it.
We work alongside our sports writer – and legend, although he’ll hate us saying it – John Walsh and a freelance court reporter who covers crown and magistrates cases across the county.
We also run our sister site, Business Crack, which is overseen by our business reporter Nigel Thompson.
We love our contributors, who you’ll see pop up with an opinion column or review or submit sports reports from their teams and Cumbria Crack is also supported by a sterling group of volunteers who look after our social media moderation and traffic and transport Facebook group.
And we can’t forget the army of phenomenal photographers wo supply us with ace pictures from sports matches and events across the county.
You can follow our Facebook page here and our Facebook group here too!
We are owned by Barrnon Media, an independent family-owned Cumbrian firm, which also owns the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald, the Keswick Reminder and the Teesdale Mercury.
How Cumbria Crack works
We’re often asked how Cumbria Crack works and how we find stories.
If you’ve got something interesting going on or an issue that’s affecting your neighbourhood – please email us at [email protected]
We also welcome press releases from companies and organisations.
But that’s not all we do – we are constantly looking for and finding nuggets of information that we think a wider audience should know – and we can build a story from there.
But without our readers we wouldn’t be able to do any of it – so please do keep sending things to us.
Social media policy
Cumbria Crack has a defined social media policy.
If we are sharing a court case, we will close comments on those posts.
This is to protect the user making the comment and us – if someone makes a comment that could prejudice a case, it is contempt of court and could land them and us in the dock.
Sensitive stories
We will also close comments off on posts that link to a sensitive story.
We would love to be able to keep comments open on all posts; but unfortunately experience has taught us that what starts off as a reasoned debate ends as something else entirely.
As a small team, we cannot look at all posts all day so we close the comments.
If you see something that you feel is inappropriate in our comments, please email us at [email protected] so we can investigate.
Why don’t we just post everything straight on to Facebook?
We use a caption and a link on Facebook to encourage you to visit our website.
We are a news organisation, and we pride ourselves on serving the community.
We are also a business. The way Cumbria Crack makes money is by you, our readers, visiting our website and that allows us to continue providing news.
The adverts on our site help pay for the news we provide.
We make no money from Facebook, which is also a business – and wants to keep you on its platform for as long as possible.
Is what you do clickbait?
No. Clickbait is sensationalist, misleading or exaggerated captions or headlines that are designed to make you want to click on a link – and then it often does not deliver what it is promising.
We aim to write captions and headlines that will make you click on our link (See Why don’t we just post everything straight on to Facebook?) but pledge never to mislead or exaggerate for the love of the click. We aim to provide news you can use.
Where do your adverts come from?
We work with another company which supplies us with the adverts on our website.
This is called programmatic advertising and is used right across the internet.
If you see an advert you think isn’t suitable, please do let us know by emailing [email protected] with a screenshot of it and the URL if you can.
We are also grateful to our Cumbrian advertisers who support Cumbria Crack and advertise directly with our commercial team.
We offer display adverts, sponsored content and job vacancy adverts too.
