Man arrested after death of man in Newcastle

police tape[A] man has been arrested after the death of a man in Newcastle.

At around 5.30am this morning police were called to the West End of Newcastle after reports of concern for the welfare of two men.

Officers were called to the scene on Joan Street by the Ambulance Service where one man was pronounced dead at the scene. His death is being treated as unexplained.

The second man was taken to hospital in a serious condition but his condition is now described as stable.

Enquiries to establish the circumstances around the death are ongoing but officers have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the incident. He remains in police custody at this time.

Officers will remain in the area throughout the day to carry out enquiries and reassure any concerned members of the public.

Anyone with information about the deaths, or who saw anyone in the area of Joan Street through the night, should contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting log 101 10/05/17 or crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
