[A] record number of students from the University of Cumbria’s performing arts courses have been signed up by agents following showcase events held in London and Manchester.

Seventeen performers from the university (nine actors and eight musical theatre performers) took to the stages of the Arts Theatre in London and Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester last month.

Five have since been signed up by agents in London, Manchester and Glasgow with another three in talks with other agencies. Another student has been offered a role on the UK tour of Legally Blond.

“As part of their third year,  students are given the opportunity to audition for a London and Manchester showcase which is an excellent opportunity for our students to place themselves in front of employment agencies who can represent them in their chosen performance genre,” Graeme Danby, Professor of Practice at the University of Cumbria, said. “This year Institute of the Arts students have given the University of Cumbria the most successful agency sign up ever.”

In the past students from the university have gone on to work in shows such as Bend it Like Beckham and The Railway Children in the West End, national tours, TV and a range of regional and touring theatre shows and cruise ships.

“As a university committed to the education of creative professionals, the final year actor and musical theatre showcase is a shining example of our ability to excel across a range of disciplines within the performing arts,” Roddy Hunter, the director of the Institute of the Arts said.
