[A] MAN accused of attacking and injuring another man with an extendable “police-style” baton has gone on trial at Carlisle Crown Court.

John Martin Porter, 37, is alleged to have assaulted Andrew Winder in a Maryport street on August 19. Porter denies charges of grievous bodily harm with intent and having an offensive weapon.

His trial began today (TUES) when jurors watched an interview Mr Winder gave to police. He claimed Porter struck him to the legs and ribs before “smashing” him in the face, leaving him with a fractured jaw.

Porter and another man – 30-year-old Gary Robinson – are also jointly on trial, each having pleaded not guilty to two intimidation charges. These relate to threats allegedly made to Mr Winder and his girlfriend, Kirsty Whitehead, during a three-week period in September.

However, Porter, of Mulgrew Close, and Robinson, of Collins Terrace, both Maryport, deny that any such intimidation took place.

The trial continues.
