[P]olice are investigating a two vehicle road traffic collision that occurred on the A6 at Plumpton.

The collision occurred at approximately 12.35pm at the Plumpton Foot junction.

The collision involved a grey VW Golf and a white van.

The driver of the Golf, a 39-year-old woman from Carlisle, suffered minor injuries. The front-seat passenger of the Golf, a woman aged in her 70s, has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the van, a 29-year-old man from Gateshead, was uninjured.

A spokesman for GNAAS said: “We were called to the A6 at Plumpton, after a woman, believed to be in her 70s, was involved in a road traffic collision between a car and a van.

“The patient sustained life-threatening injuries to her chest, hip and ankle and was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.”

The road was closed in both directions but has now reopened.

Any witnesses to the collision or anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 2219 Young, of the Mobile Support Group at Carlisle, on 101.
